Differences between lithium battery and lithium-ion battery

2022-11-17

Lithium battery uses lithium metal as electrode and generates current by electron transmission. Because it is easy to produce dendrite and cause explosion, it has long been out of application. Lithium batteries are primary batteries.
Lithium ion battery is charged and discharged by transferring lithium ions, mainly using lithium doped metal oxides as electrodes. Lithium ion batteries are rechargeable secondary batteries.

1. Lithium primary battery
Also called primary lithium battery. It can discharge continuously or intermittently. Once the power is exhausted, it can not be used again, and is widely used in electronic products with low power consumption, such as cameras. The self discharge of lithium primary battery is very low, and it can be stored for 3 years. The effect will be better if it is stored in cold storage. It is a good method to store the lithium primary battery in a low temperature place. Precautions: Unlike lithium ion batteries, lithium primary batteries cannot be charged, which is very dangerous!

2. Lithium ion battery
Also called secondary lithium battery. It can be stored for more than half a year at 20 ℃, because its self discharge rate is very low and most of its capacity can be recovered.

The self discharge phenomenon of lithium battery exists. If the battery voltage is below 3.6V for a long time, it will lead to over discharge of the battery, which will damage the internal structure of the battery and reduce the battery life. Therefore, the long-term stored lithium battery should be recharged every 3-6 months, that is, the voltage should be 3.8~3.9 V (the optimal storage voltage of the lithium battery is about 3.85 V), and the discharge depth should be 40% - 60%. It should not be fully charged. The battery shall be stored in a dry environment at 4 ℃~35 ℃ or in a moisture-proof package. Keep away from heat and direct sunlight.
